Lindgren Craft Brewery

Adventurously Brewed

Lindgren Craft Brewery is dedicated to community, agriculture, and adventure. Visit the brewery in Duncannon, PA to raise a glass to family, history, and a love of the outdoors.

Father and Son

Michael Lindgren always wanted to start a business with his father, Clifford. That dream took shape in a 16x16 cinderblock brewing facility on the family farm and has evolved into a bustling Lindgren Craft Brewery operation that anchors a small town along the Susquehanna River north of Harrisburg. It’s a community staple co-founded by a father and son pair dedicated to making great-tasting beer and to breathing life back into the old mill town.

Meet me at “The Bank”

The brewery is built at the site of the former Duncannon National Bank. Built in 1924, the building’s original character was preserved as much as possible during brewery renovations. The bank’s vault is a core element of the brewery experience. Become a “Keyholder” and visit your safety deposit box for perks like a draft debit card for a monthly beer. Looking for new brewery merch? You’ll find it neatly stacked in the vault.

In the open space once lined with tellers and townspeople making financial transactions, the brewery now operates a full brewpub and hosts a variety of special events.

Hooked

Michael Lindgren was a freshman engineering student at Penn State when he toured the Yuengling facility in Pottsville. He was struck by the way science, chemistry, manufacturing, and art all blended to define the brewery experience. That day, he knew he wanted to start a brewery. After home brewing a 9.2% Belgian Strong Ale at age 19, Lindgren was hooked. He dropped out during his junior year to pursue a career in brewing.

Beer is Agriculture

Michael Lindgren’s appreciation for agriculture is rooted in his family foundation; he grew up on Lindgren Farm raising turkeys, goats, and pigs. That formative experience is what drives him to use local ingredients whenever possible. One example? Lindgren and his team hand-pitted 300 pounds of Pennsylvania Pawpaws (pineapple meets mango meets banana) to brew a unique pawpaw hefeweizen. They’ve also brewed a sweet potato pale ale, a shitake Saison, and a popcorn beer to name a few other creative creations.

Adventurously Brewed

Lindgren Craft Brewery is the only brewery physically on the famed Appalachian Trail. While most of the 2,190-mile trail traverses traditional wilderness areas between Georgia and Maine, hikers must pass through downtown Duncannon, PA at the trail’s Susquehanna River crossing.

Thru-hikers are a common sight in the brewery mid-May to June, and day hikers stop in for a cold brew after a long hike year-round. Interested in buying a hiker a beer? Purchase a beer token that will be gifted as the hikers come through.

Lindgren tries to hike once a week. Whether he’s organizing a “clean-up” hike to keep the popular trail to the Hawk Rock Overlook clear and tidy or just hiking for fun, he always has a few beer tokens with him to pass out to hikers along the way!

The Science Guy

Lindgren says you “can’t be adventurously brewed unless you brew adventurously.” That’s where Director of Brewing Research and Development Jason Simmons comes in. Simmons approaches his craft with a mad science way of thinking. He plays with ingredients with the goal of making a sustainable, drinkable beer.

Simmons is working on a research project that analyzes water from Crystal Cave at Indian Echo Caverns in Hummelstown. The goal is to get a sense of “how the earth breathes” and to eventually make a stout out of water samples.
