Theo Armstrong founded Zeroday in Harrisburg’s Midtown neighborhood in 2015. The craft brewery grew from a DIY “big orange box” of a taproom to boasting four unique locations in the Hershey Harrisburg Region. “We’re not splitting customers,” says Armstrong. The vibe you get at Zeroday Outpost at Midtown Cinema – where you can grab a beer in the lobby to catch an indie flick on the nostalgic community theatre – is different from the vibe you get at the Outpost at Broad St. Market, a singularly iconic neighborhood gathering place.
The taproom and full-service restaurant sit just blocks away from the outposts, welcoming lovers of live music, locals looking for a spot to check emails or chill with their pup in a sunny courtyard, and, of course, craft beer enthusiasts looking for a new flavor. There’s also a brand-new spot at Fresh Market Hershey.
“If you make a subpar product, you won’t last.” That’s how Armstrong views the regional landscape in a destination full of quality craft breweries. “All brewers want to make great beer,” he says. Great beer is even better when it connects with the fabric of a city. City Islander, a light Mexican Lager with a name that pays homage to Harrisburg City Island sports and entertainment complex, won Best in Show at the 2025 PA Farm Show Craft Beer contest. It’s Theo’s favorite.
Everything, or nothing at all. Let’s start with the name of the brewery. Armstrong hiked the Appalachian Trail and took note of how hikers marked their days. Some days are 20-mile days. Some are 15-mile days. Some would say the most important days are “zero days,” days where hikers reset and recharge. Harrisburg, Armstrong says, is a place worthy of a zero day. Take time away from work or the pace of life and explore a Capital City filled with things to see and do.
Naming a beer can be an art, or a whim. The staff at Zeroday toss names into a shared file to consult when it’s time to create a label. Some names are “just because,” and others have a story.
Hannah Ison, Zeroday’s Director of Brewing Operations, was on her way home one night when she and her friends lost their way. Opening the wrong door, Hannah asked, “When did we get a dog?” And now you can order Zeroday’s take on a traditional German hefeweizen knowing where the name came from.
Did you know that all fir trees taste different? “Douglas” is a holiday brew that comes together only after the Zeroday staff has ventured into a Harrisburg-area forest to taste test some evergreens, chop the best one down, and slide it top-first into the kettle for brewing.
Hannah Ison (of “When Did We Get a Dog” fame), studied political science in school and worked on campaigns. Her brewing knowledge came mostly from soaking up every nugget she could as she tinkered alongside brewers, rising from assistant brewer to a post where she oversees all brewing operations.
Ison revels in the spirit of collaboration. Whether it’s a Zeroday brew, an outside sales and distribution win, or a successful taproom event, Ison says the best effort is a team effort. Getting to brew with her industry heroes is a bonus she’s honored to experience. “You can never know too much,” she says.
And you can never be too welcoming. Ison believes in a guiding principle of meeting people where they are. She says Zeroday will always be a place where everyone is comfortable. A place with open arms and no judgement. Rooted in a place with the diversity and vibrance of Midtown Harrisburg, Zaeroday’s vibe is woven into the community as much as the community is woven into Zeroday.
