From hidden gems to classic experiences, our local friends are sharing their favorite ways to spend time in the Hershey Harrisburg Region. Part 3 of our “Like a Local” series features George & Nelson Fernandez, co-owners of Karma Entertainment Complex in Harrisburg. George and Nelson opened Karma to bring the feel of a Dominican nightclub to the Capital City and to offer a vibrant destination for self-expression. A nightclub keeps them busy, but they love introducing friends and family to their favorite local spots.
Grab a Slice: The ever-present line at Nico’s Pizza in Downtown Harrisburg says it all!
The art of the pour: Level 2 is Harrisburg’s ultimate spot for the perfect cocktail.
Hispanic Heritage: Dine once at Los Tres Cubanos and be hooked on your new favorite spot for authentic Mexican cuisine.
George and Nelson share a passion for creating a welcoming space with high energy and endless activities for visitors and locals alike. George brings a marketing background focused on multicultural connections as well as a long portfolio of real estate endeavors. Nelson describes himself as an artist-at-heart who always thought he’d own a bar or a night club closer to retirement. But when he saw an opportunity to open something new in Harrisburg, he knew that plan was for “now,” not “later.” Together, they purchased and renovated the three-story complex at 706 N. 3rd Street to operate Karma, and LGBTQ+ bar, nightclub, and entertainment complex in the heart the city.
The pair intentionally chose Karma’s logo colors to be red, yellow, and blue – primary colors that can be blended to make any color of the rainbow and limitless hues beyond that. They want their guests to mix and become friends with someone new no matter what their “color” or interests might be. The name Karma was chosen to represent the idea that the energy you give to the universe is the energy you receive. “To receive joy, love, or kindness, you should start by giving first.”
Their “go to” spot: Café Fresco on 2nd Street is high on the list for George and Nelson as a spot to grab lunch or a cocktail. The couple frequent the restaurant enough that the waitstaff can anticipate their orders and the bar tenders start making their drinks. A place where “everybody knows your name?” That’s the kind of spot you’ll want to visit for sure!
Spend the Day: For George, a great day starts with a meal at Café Fresco (of course) and then have ice cream at Urban Churn (premium churned ice cream with all natural ingredients!)
For Nelson, he’ll point you to Hersheypark, a place he calls “magical” even though he’s not the biggest rider. As a season pass holder, he loves the sense of excitement that the sights and sounds of the amusement park bring. For him, the joy of watching other guests laugh and make memories “gives him life.” He might pass on the rides, but not the food! Nelson is a foodie who loves the sweet treats at the park.
Arts & Culture: George and Nelson want people to know that you can experience great theatre and live shows here in the Hershey Harrisburg Region without the hustle and bustle of the bigger cities. They encourage guests to look at schedules for Whitaker Center or Open Stage in Harrisburg, and Hershey Theatre in Hershey.
Nightlife: For dancing, George and Nelson hope to see you at Karma! In warmer months, dance downtown on the outdoor patio Sawyer’s. Looking for the best mixed drinks? Try the French Martini or Whiskey Business at 704 Lounge right next door to Karma. At Level 2, George and Nelson say the luxury atmosphere makes perfect sense for a place where “the art of making a really, really good cocktail comes to life.”
Pizza time: If it’s Saturday night, there’s a good chance you’ll find George and Nelson waiting in line at Nico’s Pizza. George will be ordering the Chicken Bacon Ranch!
Latino Flavor: There are lots of places to find authentic Hispanic cuisine or menus inspired by Latino culture. Try the empanadas at Rice & Beans. Order the Cuban pork sandwich at Men in the Kitchen. Feel like you’ve traveled to Cuba when you take a seat at Los Tres Cubanos. (There is a Los Tres Cubanos food truck at Hersheypark also!)
