Tröegs is a staple brand at countless distributors and retail outlets across the northeast, but to taste a Tröegs product is to merely scratch the surface of the full Tröegs Independent Brewing experience.
Tröegs has balanced growth with a dedication to local roots since its earliest days. From homebrewing to launching a Harrisburg-based brew house, and from moving operations to Hershey to huge expansions and upgrades at the Hershey operation, Tröegs evolves with the craft beer industry and most importantly, with its customers and community.
Brewing Project Manager Shaun Glazer was working on the packing line when the brewery made its move from Harrisburg to Hershey. He’s seen the brewery move from manual operations to highly intricate, automated systems, and from a team of five brewers when he started to a team of more than a dozen. He and about six other team members meet every Tuesday to talk about everything from a limited time scratch beer that’s rolling out in six months to a full-scale release that will hit the taps in two years.
Tröegs’ canning lines can fill 300 cans per minute, with products being distributed across 10 states and Washington D.C. The brand sells a lot of craft beer, but the goal is much more localized. Glazer says the ultimate win is when people discover Tröegs craft beer at the Hershey, PA brewery, and then go seek it out and share from those distribution points when they return home.
From the moment a guest arrives at Tröegs in Hershey, PA, they can sense both the large scale of the brewery and its community vibe all at once. Entering an expansive beer hall-style seating area with sky high industrial ceilings, guests are surrounded by Tröegs’ familiar logos on the walls, tons of seating options, a long bar, the “Snack Bar,” a merch and retail area, the entrance to a self-guided tour, and the smell of hops wafting through the air from the brew house. Each piece can be experienced on its own, but it’s all connected by a free-flowing space.
Located on the east end of Hersheypark Drive with ample parking, the brewery invites both local guests and visitors. The brewery experience was designed to inspire interaction with the brewery operations, with friends and family you’re dining with, and maybe even new friends sitting around the tasting room. “Regulars” gather for a meal. Sports teams celebrate a win. Families relax. Organizations host community and private events.
The free self-guided tour allows guests to see some of the craft-beer making process in action. See the fermentation tanks, the filtration system, and the bottling lines. For guests who want to dive even deeper into the science of it all, the award-winning guided tours ($ reservation required) offer more behind-the-scenes access.
USA Today readers have voted for Tröegs as the nation’s top guided brewery tour five times, and four times in a row since 2022.
For more than 20 years, the annual Art of Tröegs contest has featured artists who create Tröegs -inspired pieces. A gallery displays the winning pieces along with a rotating look at favorites from years past. Director of Retail Operations Jensine Ruscito says Tröegs’ “art” is its beer making, but loves that art is a connection point for people of all interests. Art means different things to different people, and what you see in the gallery is “just an interpretation of what our fans see when they think of Tröegs,” she says. That interpretation could be made of bottlecaps, a drawing, metalwork from cans, a video game, or any other creative work. The “cool factor” on this contest is truly a see-it-to-believe-it expression of creativity.
Yes, there are “always-on-draft” fan favorite craft beers and menu items, but guests also find a special events calendar full of unique tastings or specialized opportunities to experience local pairings and celebrations. The brewery can host private, catered events of any size with specialized spaces like the Tasting Loft, Barrel Room, or Beer Garden. The kitchen is creative with seasonal dishes and desserts.
