Pet Friendly Travel

Prep – If you haven’t traveled with your pet before or if your pet has any health issues, consult with your veterinarian before the trip. For some pets, traveling can cause undue stress. If you have any concerns, you may want to consider a trial run. Keeping a favorite toy or blanket with your pet on the trip can help.  Some vets recommend Thunder shirts, a snug-fitting garment that swaddles your dog or cat, targeting pressure points to help relieve the stress of travel.

Pack Appropriately – Make sure your pet has a collar with ID and contact information, all appropriate leashes, any medication, and a pet first aid kit.  Take your vet records and vet contact information in case of an emergency.

Car Safety – Ensure a safe trip for you and your pet by using proper restraints like a travel crate or carrier, a pet car seat, seat belt or barrier. When properly restrained, pets are less likely to be injured in the event of an accident.  They also won’t become a distraction to you while you’re driving.

Rest Stops – Take a break from the road every two to three hours for your pet to go to the bathroom, get some exercise and drink water. Travel with a gallon of cold water just for your pet to ensure proper hydration.
