The neighborhoods of downtown Harrisburg are full of surprise and delight.  From the stunning architecture and stained-glass artwork of the Pennsylvania Capitol Building to our museums steeped in State and National history, Harrisburg will offer those history buffs lucky enough to extend their business trip into a slightly longer stay, with enough to see that it may require a return visit!

See the architectural and artistic features of our Capitol, a place President Teddy Roosevelt called “the handsomest building” he’d ever seen! Guided tours through this “Palace of Art” feature its famous collection of stained glass windows, indoor and outdoor sculptures, and impressive murals and paintings. After lunch in the cafeteria, stop by the interactive Welcome Center to learn about Pennsylvania history and legislative processes of the Commonwealth.

JOHN HARRIS-SIMON CAMERON MANSION

One of Harrisburg’s historic residences, the John Harris-Simon Cameron Mansion has stood the test of time to tell the story of the prominent Pennsylvanians it housed over the centuries. Its original owner was John Harris, Jr., Harrisburg’s founder and namesake, and was later owned by Simon Cameron, notable statesman and Secretary of War under President Abraham Lincoln. On a guided tour, see how each of the mansion’s owners contributed to its history.

THE NATIONAL CIVIL WAR MUSEUM

Discover the whole story of the Civil War as told from both sides of the battlefield, depicting this restless chapter of our nation’s history. The National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg has two floors of beautiful exhibits, with thousands of three-dimensional relics including uniforms, weapons, and personal effects of the fallen soldiers.
