Visitor Tips

Guests can visit the zoo any time of year, but the animals are usually more active in cooler temperatures. Fall, winter, and spring visits might yield the most movement in the animals’ enclosures. Of course, it’s not uncommon to see the bears cooling off in the swimming hole on a hot day! In addition to the time of year, the time of day can make a difference as well. Animals tend to be active in the morning – when they are hungry and ready for breakfast!

History

Milton S. Hershey’s legacy goes far beyond his famous chocolate brand. Mr. Hershey believed that the health and happiness of his workers would correlate to the success of his business. He made considerable investments in creating a community where his employees would find everything they needed to live well and be entertained in the process. This included the development of several recreational opportunities including what is now Hersheypark®, and other assets like a theatre, community center, and – a zoo.

Fun Fact: The first residents of what began as “The Hershey Zoo” were 12 prairie dogs donated to the zoo by a family unable to care for them.
