Ride the Harrisburg, Lincoln & Lancaster Railroad
Ride an 1860’s replica of a 4-4-0 steam locomotive as it huffs, chugs, whistles, hoots, and rings its bell, traversing the original 1832 railroad bed on which President Lincoln’s funeral train traveled on April 22, 1865.
The 1850’s era coach you will travel in transports you back in time as you meander along the rails, passing the hand-cut and stacked original stone wall through the rail cut. Enjoy the peace and tranquility of the forested ride through the center of the 275-acre Stone Gables Estate. Marvel at some of the 250 to 350-year-old “witness” trees along the rail line that were there when the original funeral train passed through.
A station stop at the restored 1844 Herr’s Mill Burr Arch covered bridge provides breathtaking views and photo ops of both the covered bridge as well as the cascading, boulder-lined Conoy Creek.
After re-boarding, the train will continue to the end of the line where a 180-foot replica of a typical 1860’s era engine house has been meticulously built. After another short exit for photographs, the train will proceed back to its station platform.
Our train conductor will share the history about the property, the Lincoln Funeral Train, The Star Barn, Ironstone Ranch, and the future of a new endeavor, The Barns of Belmont, that will house the National Christmas Center.
After the train returns to its station, guests will tour the only ever built replica of the Lincoln Funeral Car.
