This Baltimore Truss-type bridge was built in 1896 by the Chambersburg Bridge Company. The bridge spans Mahantango Creek between Mifflin Township, Dauphin County and Lower Mahanoy Township, Northumberland County. It is unique from other Baltimore Truss-type bridges like Harrisburg’s Walnut Street Bridge in that the upper and lower vertical laced members that provide the bridges compression and tension are reversed. The bridge survived several floods, including severe flooding from Hurricane Agnes in 1972, without damage. In 1978 the bridge was closed to vehicular traffic and reopened as a pedestrian-only bridge. Due to structural deficiencies, it was permanently closed to any kind of traffic in 1983.
