Six-time Grammy Award winner Jason Isbell has solidified his position as one of modern Americana’s most celebrated and commercially successful artists. His work, both solo and with his band The 400 Unit, consistently achieves critical acclaim and significant chart performance, including a No. 1 debut on Billboard’s rock, folk, and country charts for the album Something More Than Free. His 2013 breakthrough album, Southeastern, was certified Gold by the RIAA and earned a place on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, demonstrating his crossover appeal and enduring impact.
Isbell’s career began with a publishing deal at the legendary FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, before he joined the southern rock outfit Drive-By Truckers in 2001. Over six years, he was a key songwriter and contributor to three of the band’s acclaimed albums, including Decoration Day and The Dirty South. He departed in 2007 to launch a solo career, releasing his debut Sirens of the Ditch that same year. While his initial solo efforts built a following, it was the deeply personal Southeastern that marked a pivotal commercial and critical turning point. Produced by Dave Cobb, the album debuted at No. 23 on the Billboard 200 and swept the 2014 Americana Music Awards, winning Album of the Year, Artist of the Year, and Song of the Year for “Cover Me Up”.
Building on this momentum, Isbell and The 400 Unit released Something More Than Free in 2015 on his own Southeastern Records label. The album secured his first No. 1 chart positions and earned two Grammy Awards for Best Americana Album and Best American Roots Song (“24 Frames”). His touring footprint expanded to include multiple sold-out nights at Nashville’s iconic Ryman Auditorium. Subsequent albums continued this trajectory of success. The Nashville Sound also won a Grammy for Best Americana Album, while the 2020 album Reunions delivered a career-high chart placement on the Adult Alternative Songs chart with its single “Be Afraid”.
Isbell’s influence extends through strategic collaborations, including writing a song performed by Bradley Cooper for the soundtrack to A Star Is Born and appearing on an album by his mentor, John Prine. He further solidified his independent standing with the self-produced album Weathervanes, which won two Grammy Awards for Best Americana Album and Best Americana Song. Beyond music, Isbell has cultivated a successful acting career, culminating in a significant role in Martin Scorsese’s film Killers of the Flower Moon.
