Winter in Hershey isn’t quite the sleepy town you may picture it to be. Yes, the rollercoasters are hibernating and the carousel horses are taking a rest. But the town is still alive with many winter-friendly activities worth a weekend getaway.
Let’s start with a warning about bears. Not the kind you see in the woods, but the kind that are aggressive on the ice. The Hershey Bears have been a been a sweet staple to the town since 1932. That’s nine decades of ferocious fans following each season (the Hershey Bears have led the AHL in attendance for a decade). Find out for yourself what 10,000 hockey fans experience on a game by game basis at the Giant Center.
If you’ve always wondered about the man behind the chocolate, The Hershey Story Museum provides the answers you’re looking for. The story of a man who went bankrupt, regained it all, and gave away his fortune - twice(!) – is told through unique displays and interactive exhibits. Don’t miss the hands-on chocolate tasting labs that happen throughout the day. And plan to grab lunch at The Pantry Café.
Not all animals are hibernating this time of year, either. In fact, some of the animals at ZooAmerica are more active than ever. Wolves, snowy owls, lynx, and deer (just to name a few) are animals native to North America that don’t mind the cold, snowy conditions. If you visit in February, you get to see the animals get an extra sweet treat – chocolate-themed food!
Don’t worry! There are chocolate-themed treats for you all month long, too. Chocolate Covered February takes over Hershey through the end of the month. Look for food and drink specials, events, and deals at various locations all over town.
Trying to watch your diet this year? Avoid the chocolate altogether at the Antique Automobile Club of America Museum. You don’t have to be a car enthusiast to appreciate the pristinely maintained vehicles on display at this motor museum. Cars, trucks, motorcycles, busses - the list goes on and on. If it has wheels, it’s here. Check their calendar of events for special exhibits and events that may be happening during your visit.
Of course there’s always Hershey’s Chocolate World Attraction to cure away your winter blues. Tour the ride and get a free sample – the perfect chocolate pick-me-up we can all use this time of year. And be sure to do the right thing by those who couldn’t visit with you. Bring home chocolate, candy, and themed apparel for anyone who missed the trip!
