PA Farm Show Complex & Expo Center’s new sport flooring to be tested this weekend by 215 basketball teams competing in US Jr. Nationals Hershey Showcase
Harrisburg, Pa. (June 2010) – Officials from the Hershey Harrisburg Regional Visitors Bureau (HHRVB), the Dauphin County Commissioners Office, and the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex & Expo Center (FSC) today announced the recent purchase of a new SnapSports® ShockTower® indoor sports surface system that has been installed for the US Junior Nationals Hershey Basketball Tournament being held at the FSC this weekend.
The new court system, purchased in a cooperative agreement among the FSC, Dauphin County, and the HHRVB, will provide approximately 78,500 square feet of playing surface within the complex – enough space to host up to 15 basketball courts or 20 volleyball courts at one time.
“The SnapCourt makes the Farm Show Complex even more versatile than it already is, allowing us to sell the facility to a new range of sporting events that we could not have hosted previously,” said Gregg Cook, HHRVB Sports Event Sales Manager. “We expect that sports event producers and operators will be excited about the expanded possibilities here.”
The new flooring’s surface and design which provides impact control, ball response, and athlete safety allows it to accommodate a wide range of sports beyond basketball including: volleyball, team handball, indoor field hockey, fencing, futsal, wrestling, and cheerleading.
“We see this as a wise investment in the future of our county,” said Dauphin County Commissioner Jeff Haste. “We are gaining recognition as a sporting event destination with our quality venues, central location to major population centers, and this area’s overall affordability. Adding this flooring capability allows us to now attract new sports competitions that will pay dividends for years and keep us competitive in what has become a lucrative market segment.”
In 2009, sporting events hosted in the Hershey Harrisburg Region had an economic impact on the local communities of approximately $30 million thru direct and indirect spending according to HHRVB tourism officials.
The new flooring that was installed Thursday in the facility’s Exhibition Hall will be thoroughly tested over four-days by approximately 215 girls basketball teams competing in the US Junior Nationals Hershey Showcase. According to event organizers, this Division II/III/NAIA/JC college coaches viewing event has now sold out the past two years.
But according to Patrick J. Kerwin, Executive Director of the FSC, this weekend only marks the start of a whole new market of events the complex will be ‘courting’ now that the flooring system is available to event producers.
“We are pleased with our partnerships that help make the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex & Expo Center one of the premiere multi-purpose facilities in the region,” said Kerwin. “As youth and amateur sports remain on the rise, the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex is eager to host these events, which we hope will translate into substantial returns not only for the facility but for Pennsylvania taxpayers and the entire Mid-state region.”
