HHR to Host 76th Annual State Bowling Championship in 2015

Published: Dec 14, 2012

Tourism officials project the 13-week event to generate $3.7 million for the local economy.

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania State Bowling Association (PSBA) has selected the Hershey Harrisburg Region (HHR) to host the State Bowling Championship Tournament in 2015, according to Gregg Cook, Sports Marketing Manager of the Hershey Harrisburg Regional Visitors Bureau.

According to Cook, the tournament will draw 1,500 teams competing over 13 weekends from late

March to June at ABC Lanes East and create an estimated $3.7 million in direct spending within the region from teams traveling to the area to compete over the three-month period.

“Tournaments like this create a significant economic impact in our region because it spans over multiple weeks and each team typically has five members,” Cook said. “That translates into multiple room nights and return business over a three-month period.”

The tournament format also allows bowlers of all ages and skill levels to compete, according to event organizer Barb Bair of the Greater Harrisburg Chapter of the Pennsylvania State Bowling Association. Bowlers do not compete in gender or age groups and do not need to qualify, allowing any sanctioned adult bowler to compete in the tournament.

“Barb and her Chapter were key players in our region securing this event in 2015,” said Cook. “The bureau truly values local organizations like the Greater Harrisburg Chapter of the Pennsylvania State Bowling Association because they realize our region is a great place to host events and they work with us to make it happen. We would always like to see more sports teams and local associations thinking this way.”

The State Championship will be held in Wilkes Barre in 2013 and in Erie in 2014. To learn more about the Pennsylvania State Bowling Association, visit www.psbabowling.com or contact Barb Bair at BB2Strike@aol.com.
