WorkPlay, PA (Hershey Harrisburg Region) – The Hershey Harrisburg Regional Visitors Bureau (HHRVB) today announced the return of the limited edition 2011 Visitors Guide QR code cover for the 2011 Keystone State Games (KSG), July 25-31, 2011.

Bureau officials have been focused on youth-oriented mobile marketing tactics throughout the year-long promotion of the games including advertising on Facebook and pushing registration updates via Twitter.

Now the bureau is going for the gold during the games by utilizing QR codes linking participants to social media sweepstakes and top-rated travel applications (apps).

Copies of the unique guide featuring a fully functional 8x8-inch QR code on the cover will be distributed to the first 500 KSG participants registering at the PA Farm Show Complex & Expo Center beginning Wednesday, July 27  (FSC).

Smartphones users can scan the cover to register for a sweepstakes to win an iPad 2 32GB + WiFi and download the 20 top-rated free travel apps. QR codes throughout the guide also link to exclusive content for smartphone users. The covers can be shared among athletes and the address for the hidden sweepstakes page can be shared via Twitter, email, or text.

“We wanted to create a dialogue with the young athletes and their families coming to our region during the games,” said bureau president Mary Smith. “Because we are a vacation destination, many will stay extra days to enjoy the regional attractions. The cool cover and premium prize will encourage participants to take our guide and use it to discover all the region has to offer beyond our most recognized assets.”

According to Smith, the bureau’s goal with producing the coded cover was to remain cutting edge in the travel industry. The entire project was just one more investment in what has been an aggressive social media and destination marketing strategy since 2009.

The bureau recently launched a new Web site VisitHersheyHarrisburg.org with an itinerary building tool and interactive mapping capability. Smith feels the addition of QR codes in the guide allows visitors to simply use the publications and the Web site together more smoothly.

“The QR codes help visitors connect from our new offline materials such as our 2011 Visitors Guide or Coupon Book and Dining Guide to our dynamic online tools,” Smith said. “Smartphone technology is changing how people travel. This is the next step.”

The release of the first 450 limited edition Visitors Guides was highly successful, according to bureau officials. From April 15 through May 15 the bureau tracked 315 code scans; 2,600 entries in the bureau’s online sweepstakes; and 844 new friends to the HHRVB Facebook page - facebook.com/HersheyHarrisburg.
