Pet-Friendly Travel

Pets are part of the family, so why leave them out of your family getaway?  According to a recent study by AAA and Best Western International, more than half of us bring our pets along on our trips.  The Hershey Harrisburg Region is ready with plenty of pet-friendly accommodations and activities.  Here are some tips to make the road trip more enjoyable for both of you.

Tips for Traveling with Pets:

Prep – If you haven’t traveled with your pet before or if your pet has any health issues, consult with your veterinarian before the trip. For some pets, traveling can cause undue stress. If you have any concerns, you may want to consider a trial run. Keeping a favorite toy or blanket with your pet on the trip can help.  Some vets recommend Thunder shirts, a snug-fitting garment that swaddles your dog or cat, targeting pressure points to help relieve the stress of travel.

Pack Appropriately – Make sure your pet has a collar with ID and contact information, all appropriate leashes, any medication and a pet first aid kit.  Take your vet records and vet contact information in case of emergency.

Car Safety – Ensure a safe trip for you and your pet by using proper restraints like a travel crate or carrier, a pet car seat, seat belt or barrier. When properly restrained, pets are less likely to be injured in the event of an accident.  They also won’t become a distraction to you while you’re driving.

Rest Stops – Take a break from the road every two to three hours for your pet to go to the bathroom, get some exercise and drink water. Travel with a gallon of cold water just for your pet to ensure proper hydration.
