The Historical Marker Program is administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC). When the Commission was originally established in 1913, one of its major responsibilities was to mark places and locations where historic events took place. Today, throughout Pennsylvania, over 2,000 blue and gold cast aluminum markers dot the landscape and detail people, places, events, and inventions important to the state’s history. Any person or organization can nominate a marker subject. Submissions are reviewed and approved by the PHMC. Once approved, the markers are installed and often dedicated in public ceremonies.
