Old Downtown Harrisburg Commercial Historic District

  • Harrisburg, PA 17101

Harrisburg’s Old Downtown Historic District is bounded on the north and south by Strawberry Alley and Chestnut Street and on the east and west by Fourth and Third Streets. It is characterized by buildings originally occupied by Harrisburg’s legal, financial, and communication industries and the hotels, restaurants, and men’s clothing stores that supported it. Harrisburg’s unique concentration of these industries in a relatively small geographic area occurred because the area is constrained by the city’s main street, Market, intersecting with Third at the Capitol Complex, the courthouse and market on the west, and the railroad terminal and canal on the east. Such concentrated development allows the area to serve as both a timeline of commercial architecture and of Harrisburg’s business development.
