Dauphin County’s oldest community was laid out by George Fisher in 1755 and officially incorporated as a borough in 1826. So named for its location midway between Lancaster and Carlisle in a rich agricultural area, Middletown became an early hub of commerce and the site of successful flour mill, lumbering, and ironworking businesses. In the 19th century, Middletown became an important shipping port due to its location at the junction of the Pennsylvania and Union Canals. Today, much of Middletown’s historic architecture remains. It is also home to Harrisburg International Airport.
