Burd Tombs

  • Pa. 441, N. Union St. at Park Circle Rd. Middletwon, PA 17057

The graves of Colonel James Burd and his wife Sarah Shippen lie nearby, just beyond the entrance to Middletown Cemetery. A renowned soldier during the French & Indian War and a prominent resident of Middletown, Burd and a group of residents drafted the Middletown Resolves. Predating the Declaration of Independence by two years, the Resolves were issued as a formal protest against the unjust acts passed in Britain’s Parliament that severely limited the rights of the American colonists.
