Governor Tom Wolf and First Lady Frances Wolf today invited the public to visit the Governor’s Residence in Harrisburg this Sunday, June 11th for “Arts in the Garden” – the first Second Sunday event of the season. Second Sundays are an annual series of free summer events offered at the Governor’s Residence on the second Sunday of each month from June through September. Visitors are invited to explore the Governor’s Residence and gardens from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. Each event will highlight a specific theme and feature family-friendly activities.

During “Arts in the Garden” this Sunday, dancers from Rasika School of Dance will perform live at 1:00pm, 2:00pm and 3:00pm and the Hanover High School Steel Drum Band (Hanover Steel) will perform at 1:30pm, 2:30pm, and 3:30pm. Artists from the Art Association of Harrisburg and Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC) will paint en plein air throughout the gardens. Representatives from Red Stone Glen Fiber Arts Center will provide fiber arts weaving demonstrations using different types of looms. Local potter and school teacher Erin Dean will provide pottery-making demonstrations using a spinning wheel, and local artist Marsha Souders will also provide demonstrations on techniques used to make clay monoprints. Face painting will be available for interested children throughout the afternoon.

Governor’s Residence docents will be on hand to provide information as visitors are invited to explore the space and the gardens through self-guided tours. This event will also provide one of the last opportunities for the public to view the current art exhibit of works by former Pennsylvania House Speaker K. Leroy Irvis, which is on display in the State Rooms through the end of June. Irvis was the first African American to serve as speaker of the house in any state legislature in the United States since Reconstruction, and was also a prolific artist who created wood sculptures, abstract paintings, poetry, and other works of art during the latter half of the 20th Century.

Second Sunday events are free, and reservations are not required. No large bags, purses or totes are permitted, and security measures will be in place. The dates and themes of the 2017 Second Sunday events are as follows:

  • Sunday, June 11:      Arts in the Garden
  • Sunday, July 9:         Healthy Eating from the Garden
  • Sunday, August 13:  Creatures of the Garden
  • Sunday, Sept. 10:     Gallery Walk

In addition to Second Sunday events, docent-led tours of the Governor’s Residence and grounds are being offered every Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30am to 2:00pm between now and the end of June. Please note that reservations are required for guided tours, and can be made by calling the Residence at 717-772-9130.
