Ghosts, Ghoulies and Things That Go Bump in the Night: Spiritualism and Spirit Photography and the Civil War @ The National Civil War Museum

Presentation with Myra Reichart "Ghosts, Ghoulies and Things That Go Bump in the Night: Spiritualism and Spirit Photography and the Civil War"

With 620,000 dead in the Civil War, it is not surprising that many of those left behind sought solace and understanding in their religious beliefs. Spiritualism, a belief that spirits of the dead have both the ability and the inclination to communicate with the living, reached its peak growth in membership from the 1840s to the 1920s, especially in English speaking countries. By 1897, Spiritualism was said to have more than eight million followers in the Unites States and Europe, mostly drawn from the middle and upper classes. We’ll look at Spiritualism and its companion Spirit Photography which purported to show images of ghosts in photographs of the living. We’ll learn about the mediums, their critics and some of the “celebrities” of the day who were true believers.

Entrance to the presentation is included with the purchase of museum admission.
