You know the saying. Memorial Day Weekend is the “Unofficial start to Summer.” It’s a time for barbeques, fireworks and a patriotic sea of red, white and blue. It’s a time to remember and celebrate the heroes who died for our country and to soak in the all the things that we can enjoy because of their bravery: Family. Friends. Freedom.

How are you celebrating? Here are a few of our top picks for events and activities in the Hershey Harrisburg Region.

ArtsFest @ Harrisburg’s River Front Park
Saturday, May 23 to Monday, May 25

Harrisburg kicks off summer with a 3-day ArtsFest that sprawls out along more than 10 blocks between Front Street and the banks of the Susquehanna River.  You’ll find some of the most beautiful and unique pieces of art from 250 artists and craftspeople selling photos, paintings, jewelry and more.

Organizers definitely had the little ones in mind when they placed Kidsfest right by the Walnut Street walking bridge. Kids can make their own artistic projects and enjoy theatre shows, dancers, magicians and comedians. And don’t forget all that’s available on City Island! Cross the walking bridge to take a ride on the train, try the batting cages of sail on the Pride of the Susquehanna Riverboat for a 45-minute sightseeing cruise.

Fireworks! Displays will launch after the Harrisburg Senators Baseball games on Friday and Sunday nights at approximately 9:15.

Travel Tip: Make a plan! Download the Map and Calendar to see what’s on tap each day.

Friendly Tip: Relax. ArtsFest can get crowded, but the long stretch of grassy riverfront offers tons of space to spread out with your family and watch the Susquehanna flow by.

Parking Tip: The City Island lot is close, convenient and cost effective at $5.00 for the day. *Downtown lots are open and will charge regular rates. Street parking is available, but be sure to check and see if you’re in a spot where you’ll need to use a pay station.

Plan Your ArtsFest Weekend

The Boardwalk at Hersheypark

So far so good on the forecast, soooooo it looks like it’s going to be a perfect weekend to make a splash when The Boardwalk at Hersheypark officially opens this weekend! After you coast along the lazy river, you can coast through the park’s newest family thrill ride! Laff Trakk is the nation’s first indoor, free-spinning glow coaster. After a 50 foot first climb, riders in 4-person cars spin along a darkened fun house-themed track. The free-spinning motion means that riders will have a unique experience every ride!

Whether you're a seasoned park pro or making your first trip, it's a great idea to check out our TIPS to make sure you're getting the most out of your park experience.

Memorial Day Program at Fort Indiantown Gap
Sunday, May 24 @ 2 PM

The Memorial Day service at Fort Indiantown Gap is a poignant ceremony to honor the men and women who died serving in the country’s Armed Forces.

Did You Know: The Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial at Fort Indiantown Gap is the largest monument in VA’s National cemeteries. Take some time to visit the other monuments located throughout the property, but pay close attention to which roads are marked as “private.”
