Pittsburgh is about to get a little closer to Harrisburg. This fall, for the first time since 2008, Pittsburgh International Airport and Harrisburg International Airport will be linked by air service. Southern Airways Express, an intra-state commuter line that already serves several small Pennsylvania cities, will begin service between Pittsburgh and HIA on Oct. 30, Pittsburgh airport spokesman Bob Kerlik said.
"Pittsburgh to Harrisburg is destined to become one of our signature routes for the entire region," airline chairman and CEO Stan Little said.
The new route will offer three non-stop flights each weekday and one flight each day on Saturdays and Sundays, officials said.

Southern currently flies daily in the Mid-Atlantic Region between Pittsburgh and the Pennsylvania communities of Altoona, Bradford, Franklin, and Lancaster, as well as Hagerstown, Md. and Jamestown, N.Y.
"Southern Airways is proud and honored, with our forthcoming fall schedule, to serve more cities in Pennsylvania than any other airline,” Little added.
Based in Southaven, Miss., just south of Memphis, Tenn., Southern Airways Express operates a fleet of commuter aircraft, and does code-share flights for larger airlines.
In February, Southern acquired Sun Air Express, which served five cities in Pennsylvania. This summer, Southern celebrated rebranding ceremonies in those cities to mark the official transition to Southern aircraft and crews.
"Having our two airports once again connected by air will be extremely beneficial to those traveling between our regions," HIA Executive Director Timothy J. Edwards said.
"We are thankful for the partnership and support of the Allegheny County Airport Authority, the Pittsburgh Business community, regional elected officials, and of course Southern Airways, for making this service a reality," he added.
Southern Airways' Pittsburgh to Harrisburg tickets will be available for purchase at beginning  Aug. 15, with an introductory fare of $99. Tickets also may be purchased through a call center at 1-800-329-0485.
