Go Big Red Release and Tasting
May 1, 2014
Spring Gate Announces their Big Red Release Tasting from 6:00pm - 8:00pm.
These magnificent wines are made from Virginia grapes by our award winning sister winery.
The tasting will be $8, and half the proceeds will go to one of our favorite charities, Timbali Crafts. Timbali has been in operation for six years and we've had he pleasure of seeing them "on site", they teach African women to be self-sufficient through creating crafts sold throughout the U.S. A representative of Timbali Crafts will be present to display and sell you some of their pocketbooks and other crafts.
To be able to do the tasting, you are going to have to have a red hat of your favorite team or organization - no one will be served without supporting their team, and by tasting - Timbali!
The owner of SpringGate (ex of RPI) and the winemaker (ex of Cornell) will be there to talk and cheer on their teams!
Wines available for tasting will be:
Cabernet Franc - Spice and bright red cherry fruit up front, followed by a smooth black pepper finish that is characteristic of this varietal in Virginia. Hints of chocolate and coffee complement the oak from American and French barrels. Look for these flavors to continue to intensify with age. Enjoy this with a slow simmered beef stew or any tomato-based dishes, such as Italian cuisine.
Meritage - A complex and complete Bordeaux style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. A light oak aroma balances dark berries on the nose. The flavour opens up to reveal layers of currants and juicy red fruit, subtle juniper and mocha. A full mouthfeel is complimented by soft tannins that provide a very pleasant and lasting fruit filled finish that will have you reaching for another sip. This wine has been paired with a dark chocolate cherry truffle made with tart Morello cherries. It pairs equally well with Steak au Poivre or a pork loin roast, complimented with a hash of peppered potatoes and Granny Smith apples.
Petite Verdot - Sweet violet aromas, fresh cedar and just the right amount of French oak integrate into a soft start, bold mid-palate, and lingering finish. Pairs well with a classic steak dinner.
"Melange Mystere" Blend of 50% Mourvedre and 50% Merlot -
A slightly herbaceous, almost Marjoram nose is complimented with a pleasant oak aroma, stemming from 18 months of aging in barrels. The initial nose of ripe dark cherry turns into juicy, fresh currants on the palate. With some earthiness and savory characters, and firm acidity on the finish, this wine is definitely a candidate for pairing with typically Pinot Noir friendly food. Stuffed mushrooms, duck, and salmon come to mind, or possibly chocolate mousse with raspberries.
Rose of Chambourcin - Dry Rosé, highlighting white cherries, strawberies, and hints of spice. Serve well chilled with grilled meats or pizza.
